How can I easily sterilise my equipment? Steriliser/boiling water or other methods?

For plastic, metal and glass components -

Clean all metal equipment (pots and utensils) with hot, soapy water. Rinse well and then follow the below steps.

  1. After the cleaning step, fill the pot you are using for cheese making about half full of clean water and put in all metal utensils.
  2. Put the pot on the stove and heat to boiling point with the lid on. Keep it at a rolling boil for 5 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat and allow utensils to air dry on a clean bench.

If you want to use sterilisers - we recommend Baby Bottle Sterilising Tablets (found at the supermarket) or Food Grade Iodophor Solution. Follow the instructions on the pack.

These are great options for plastic equipment (but can be used for metal and glass) as they don’t require heat. Lots of the Baby Bottle Sterilising Tablets also don’t require rinsing.

For glass jars and glass components -

Run the glass jar or bottle under water so it’s wet. Place it in the microwave, on high power, for 1 minute.

Carefully remove with rubber gloves or something to protect your hands as it will be very hot. Leave to cool on a bench before using.

You could also simply submerge it in boiling water, be careful to remove it from the water without hurting yourself.
